THE STORY OF YANDO
Named for the man who settled here first.
Wayando was founded in 2009 by Linda Okatch Mungayaka, on the very land where, as the story goes, an old man named Yando settled generations ago. The land around his home filled with his progeny and relatives, and in time became known as “Wa-Yando” — Wayando, the land of Yando.
Linda has been a steward of this small piece of Yando’s story ever since, offering every visitor a chance to connect with the people, the land, the lake, and the many, many birds treasured here on the island.
Rusinga Island is a birder’s paradise — hundreds of species, from hawks and eagles to sparrows, kingfishers, hamerkops, egrets, and ibis.

GETTING THERE
From Mbita town to Wayando

Start in Mbita town and cross the Mbita bridge onto Rusinga Island.

Follow the Wanyama Kaswanga “Ring Road” for approximately 5 km.

Watch for the Wayando signage on the road, then turn right.
